Genre Opening sequence analysis The International



First production Ident: Columbia A Sony pictures entertainment company.
Sound: Standard Columbia Score


Second production ident: Atlas Entertainment
Sound: Standard Atlas score
Close up: Introduction to what we believe is the main character,
Sound: Rain hitting the roof of the shelter he is standing under.
Mise en scene: Dark, grey setting with our protagonist in casual clothing, suggesting it is a normal every day situation for our main character.

Title: Location Title, Berlin Germany
Sound: Rain still falling


Shot: Establishing shot, better understanding of the setting we are in.
Sound: Rain falling and cars driving in the background. Immerses the audience into the scene and gives us a small description of the setting.  
Mise en scene: Airport, suggesting foreign criminals flying in. People in dark clothing.

Shot: Close up, of a new character looking through mirror.
Sound: Dialogue begins between the two men. This shot gives us an idea that the man is quite unknown and mysterious and hidden.
Mise en scene: Blacked out windowed car, this connotes ideas of crime and danger due to the car being totally black and hidden

Shot: Close up of a new character
Sound: Dialogue and rain falling onto the roof/windows of the car.
Mise En Scene: Character in casual business clothes, indicates ideas of importance about this character.
Shot: Close up of what we presume is the antagonist
Sound: Lighter Flicking, flame burning/cigarette lighting. This gives us a sense of how both characters are neutral and have nothing against each other.
Mise En Scene: Cannot see our new characters clothing, Cigarette and lighter props suggesting danger due to the criminal being a smoker and already quite suspicious

Shot: Over the shoulder looking at character
Sound: Rain falling onto roof, cars driving past and pedestrians talking. This builds tension as to what is actually going to happen and why the protagonist is looking at the man.
Mise En scene: Cars driving past, convinces the audience that it is a casual day in Berlin and that nothing major will happen

Shot: Wide shot, protagonist running through street to other character who has been sick and is dying.
Sound: Car horns blaring and whip of the wind as each car drives past. This immerses the audience as we hear each car drive past and nearly hit the man
Mise En scene: Casual clothing again, things have now escalated building tension for the audience.

Shot: Long shot, our character is hit by a wing mirror of the bus
Sound: Everything cuts out except a high pitch humming sound as if we ourselves have been hit like the character has.
Mise En scene: Casual clothing, character has been hit by bus and is now building more tension for the audience.
